.Mac push e-mail in iPhone 2.0?

A certain, unnamed individual sent TUAW some pictures of the latest build of the iPhone firmware showing .Mac push e-mail. The picture shows the main Settings page with a new button: “Fetch new data.” When you click the button, you are taken to a list of your mail accounts, where you can choose between either “fetch” or “push.”

According to Mr. Anonymous, while .Mac is offering push e-mail, you are currently not able to do contact or calendar syncing.

The 5th Beta Version! Latest iPhone SDK Released!

Today Apple released the new version of iPhone SDK and firmware. There are some big changes in the new SDK (build 9M2173a, beta 5):

  • API reference largely updated to beta 5 API.
  • You can now pass a flag to preserve data files while uploading for Run/Debug/Go.
  • You can now add the view of a UIViewController to an arbitrary view.
  • Content purchased from iTunes Store will not sync to or play on devices with iPhone OS beta installed. iTunes will report that you need a newer update of the iPhone software to play the content.
  • Code signing is now enforced on the device. This means that your project will need to have a certificate signing identity that resolves to a valid certificate in your keychain. If there is no identity entered, the code will run properly in the simulator, but will fail to execute on devices.
  • The version of Foundation in the simulator platform includes functionality not included in iPhone OS. To ensure functionality is not used that is not present on iPhone, check the documentation for availability information.
  • etc…

You can download the latest iPhone SDK from Apple’s iPhone Developer site, and the changes can be found here if you have an online SDK account.

You can direct download the tool: Muxo 0.3.3 from here or from my mirror.

Secrets Hidden in iPhone: iControl and Jabber Support?

Anonymous reporter told TUAW that according to code found in the latest firmware release, Apple is working on a new iPhone application called iControl. Like Apple TV and other remote controllers, it would allow the iPhone to connect wirelessly to local iTunes libraries and browse through and play media from those sources.

TUAW is told that a media navigator will allow you to view videos, play podcasts, listen to music and even support shuffle playback. The screenshot shown here shows some of the localizable strings for the iPhone-based application. There’s obviously no timeline for release, but since the SDK event back in February, it’s been rumored that Apple would release some official iPhone apps of their own, and iControl might be the first.

Later, same person told TUAW a new XMPP framework has been spotten in the latest iPhone firmware. XMPP refers to the open source standard developed by the Jabber community for instant messaging. Remember back in March when Apple announced it would support native instant messaging? In a nutshell, it looks like Apple’s new iPhone-based chat will be built on Jabber/XMPP.

Unfortunately, we’re told that this XMPP support remains in a private framework and will not be available to 3rd party SDK developers. Apple has made a strong commitment to sand-boxed development, allowing developers little access to the underlying OS and frameworks. Single-purpose apps like games should thrive in this development environment while less bounded utilities like social networking apps may struggle–or at least have to depend strongly on web-based servers.
